Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of heightened receptivity in which you are able to refocus your mind and body for success. Perhaps you have been driving and suddenly realized you are at your destination, or maybe missed the exit you were meant to get off on. Consider a time when you watched a film so transfixed that you lost track of the fact that those are just actors on the screen and you began to weep, or it felt like the movie just flew by and 2 hours were gone. These are examples of natural hypnotic trance phenomena.

Hypnosis is achieved by creating the ideal environment for the subconscious mind to accept and form new ideas and habits. This happens when the mind’s brainwave patterns achieve an Alpha-Theta crossover state. Alpha is characterized by extreme relaxation, and Theta is associated with creativity, spontaneity, memory formation, and synchronicity of the mind and body. When the mind is in this crossover state, the subconscious more readily accepts new suggestions- allowing old habits and beliefs to become a thing of the past. This is one of the most rapid natural ways to achieve behavioral change.

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state you’ve already experienced thousands of times. It is not manipulation, mind control, or magic. It simply is a tool that will allow you to tap into the power of your mind and take control of your life.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Absolutely! Hypnosis is a very natural state you have experienced thousands of times before. All you need is to be a willing and active participant.

When I am in hypnosis, does the hypnotherapist have complete control over me?

This is idea comes from movies and television. In hypnosis, the subject is always in control and able to resist anything that they are unwilling or would not want to do. Hypnosis is not a loss of control, rather it is the most control a person has ever had over their mind. We are able to tap into a part of the mind that is normally automatic and unconscious, and make it conscious for the purpose of creating positive changes.

Are you asleep during hynosis?

In hypnosis, you never really fall asleep. The hypnotherapist may use the words deep sleep, but that is so the conscious mind has a familiar place to go while we work to reform habits or tweak unwanted beliefs. I have seen clients become so wonderfully relaxed that they snore, but the subconscious is very much awake and still responds to suggestion. Few people experience a mild time distortion similar to being engrossed in their favorite film and realizing they have reached the end as if no time has passed at all.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis by definition is not a state of relaxation. Rather, we often create a profound state of relaxation as a result as we assist in making the changes. Most people report feeling a deep sense of relaxation and calm. I find people are normally pleasantly surprised at how natural hypnosis feels, as we have been conditioned our whole lives to enter into state of trance from movies, television, and normal daily activities.

There is no ‘one’ feeling to hypnosis as everyone experiences it differently, but many feel a “magical” feeling like they have entered a waking dream where they are able to consciously explore the mind like a daydream. Your mind will be alert and attentive to the suggestions you are receiving, while being focused directly on the experience you are receiving.

How long does a hypnotherapy session take?

Each client’s situation is unique. Rapid change is possible through the many techniques we use during a session. Most clients are scheduled for a brief set of sessions as my goal is to give you the most effective healing modalities for your unique situation to provide the most effective use of your time. Having a few sessions is the perfect model to create rapid change in you, while providing continued reinforcement.

Most people begin to experience profound benefits from the first session, though hypnosis is a process. Some issues are released in one session while others take more time, as each person is unique. I cannot predict an exact time your issue will be resolved, however, huge transformations are typically seen within a few short sessions. I look forward to seeing you experience your transformation!
